“Not All Crankshafts Are The Same”
Our crankshafts (top) are works-of-art because they are fully counter-weighted. Partially counter-weighted cranks (bottom) do not evenly counter each piston/rod’s thrust but they are slightly lighter, which is why they tend to be used for racing. Ironically, race engines do not have the same dynamic loads as street engines because they are always spinning between 4000 & 7200 RPM when they are loaded. Street engines are loaded from just off idle. The original cast steel cranks in Jaguars are cycle fatigued and can fail when put into high performance engines. For example, we broke our test engine’s Jaguar crankshaft after 200 pulls on our dyno during our testing sessions. This is why it is advisable to replace your crankshaft with a billet steel crank when doing a total rebuild - even when you are keeping the original stroke. E-Torque also stocks normal (106mm) engine stroker crankshaft kits.

E-Torque’s Stroker crankshafts have narrower rod journals than a sock Jaguar crank. This was done for two reasons. First - it removes substantial weight from the rod, and Second - the narrower rod journal also stiffens the crankshaft. An inline six cylinder engine has a very long crankshaft, which makes it prone to instability. This was a way of helping to stiffen the crank and reduce reciprocating weight.

DID YOU KNOW?

The XK engine is really two three-cylinder engines put together.

There is a lot of rocking force generated between cylinders three and four because they fire opposite each other. The crankshaft is loaded on one side of the center bearing on one stroke and then on the opposite side on the next stroke. This works the crankshaft backwards and forwards in a prying motion. Under heavy loading, this can cause a crankshaft to fail. The pairing of counterweights on either side of the rod journal balance the forces and create far more stability. Counterweight pairing also provides a smoother turning crankshaft with less vibration. There is no finer crankshaft offered for the XK engine – regardless of price.

Standard stroke crankshafts use standard CP-Carrillo connecting rods with Jaguar specification rod bearings. These kits include the rods - even though some people want to reuse the original Jaguar Rods. That is a bad idea. Rods suffer from cycle fatigue and the big ends become oval. Although it is possible to recondition a rod by machining it back to round after the cap is shaved down a bit, that doesn’t do anything for the metal fatigue problem. When a Jaguar engine is rebuilt, there are thousands of dollars in parts at stake. A rod failure will destroy most of the new parts and the original block - which may have the car’s serial number. It is therefore an unwise risk.
